Don’t think I don’t know

His stomach churned faster and he wobbled. Grove stood and scooped him into his embrace.

“He knows.” CJ’s fear hit hard. “He knows.”

Grove nodded. “Come on.” He led him from the room and out to the sofa. He helped him to sit, then joined him. “I know that’s hard to see, but here’s the thing. We have the footage he was there. That’ll help get him nabbed. We have proof he left the note.”

“Are his prints on it? It’s scrawled. You can’t be sure it’s him.” He leaned over, burying his head between his knees to calm his nausea. David would find him. He’d figure out where he’d gone to hide and he’d come looking for him.

“There are prints and that’s why the pack is investigating this. They’re not going to let this slide. If there’s a chance to catch him, then they’ll find it.” Grove smoothed his palm over CJ’s thigh. “My wolf is involved, too. He won’t let anyone hurt you.”

“He won’t?” His voice came out raw and cracked. “What do you mean?”

“I mean, I’m not letting this shit do anything to you. If he does, he’ll have to go through me. Through the pack.” Grove fixed his gaze on CJ’s and the corner of his mouth curved into a small smile. “I promise.”

He’d never had anyone outside of his own pack that he could rely on. No one who’d protect him. “Even after just a couple days?”

“Even after that short period of time.” Grove tugged CJ onto his lap. “I said I didn’t let people in easily and I don’t like to put down my walls.”

He hadn’t said those words specifically, but CJ understood what he was trying to say.

“Then you came along. It started out as me wanting to help you and it’s turned into something more. I never thought that would happen and I don’t know if that means we’re destined for forever. What I do know is that we’re in this situation for a reason,” Grove said. “It’s not happenstance.”

“No?” He straddled Grove’s thighs. He draped his arms around Grove’s shoulders and his breath lodged in his throat. “Then what is this?”

“We were put together because it’s what’s meant to be.” Grove cupped CJ’s jaw. “I want you here and to share my life. I don’t show just anyone my office, but I trust you.”

He knew. Grove had taken him into his confidence and the trust was genuine. He wanted to be worthy of Grove.

“My pack is your pack. You’re one of us and we’ll protect you. I sure as hell will.” Grove’s smile grew. “I don’t fuck on the first night, either, but you’re a special case. You bring me out of my comfort zone and make me want to be better.”

He couldn’t relax, but Grove’s words reassured him.

“I showed you that information because I want you to see I’m not hiding something from you. We’re in this together. That might be my pack’s land, but it was your home. Now your home is with me.
